How to Tell If Fabric Is Wool or a Wool Blend
- 1). Touch the surface of your material.
- 2). Carefully analyze the temperature of the material. Wool material has a warm temperature compared to plant based materials -- cotton, rayon and linen -- which conduct heat, resulting in a cool feel.
- 3). If the material is cool to touch, it may still be a wool blend. Proceed with the bleach or burn test to get a more accurate result.
- 1). Cut a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of material.
- 2). Loosen the threads and fiber by pulling and rubbing the material between your fingers.
- 3). Pour 1 cup of bleach into a small bowl.
- 4). Insert the 1 inch by 1 inch piece of material.
- 5). Wait approximately seven hours. Analyze the result. If the material has begun to disintegrate or has dissolved, the material is wool or contains a large percentage of wool. If the material remains in its true form, it is plant based or man made.
- 1). Cut a segment of material 1 inch by 1 inch.
- 2). Loosen the threads and fiber by pulling and rubbing the material between your fingers.
- 3). Hold the material over the sink and light it with a match.
- 4). Watch how the material burns. The material is wool if the flame goes out before burning the whole piece. If the material burns completely, then it is plant based or man made.
