Millions of people around the world suffer from the annoying sounds of tinnitus.
It has been discovered that, although there is no known cure for tinnitus, it is possible to retrain the nervous system in a way that the sounds have no affect on the person There is a new procedure that has been shown to be effective.
It is known as Tinnitus retraining therapy, and it normally takes one to two years to work.
This type of therapy teaches the person how to manage tinnitus.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy was developed in the 80s by Dr.
Pawel Jastreboff.
In his work with individual people, he found that the intensity and tone of tinnitus were not the problem.
The problem has to do with how a person perceives the sounds.
He was quite surprised to find that the irritating noises had no effect upon many of the people he talked with.
There are constant noises in the life of every person.
It may be something as simple as a refrigerator humming.
He found that the central nervous system did not recognize these noises as significant, and as a result they were rarely noticed.
This led him to develop Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
Based upon the thesis that the nervous system could be retrained to view the tinnitus as insignificant, Jastreboff developed the two steps of tinnitus retraining therapy.
First, it was important to remove any negative associations with the tinnitus.
Secondly, it was necessary for the person to stay constantly aware of the tinnitus during training sessions.
If a person became unaware of the sounds, it made retraining nearly impossible.
The duration of retraining therapy is approximately two years.
In tinnitus, the problem lies in the silent spaces between the sounds.
In order to cover up these periods of silence, the person wears a hearing device that transmits sound into the ear.
As the patient becomes less annoyed by the sound, his nervous system removes the negative thoughts connected with tinnitus.
The central nervous system can then be reprogrammed into viewing tinnitus as something insignificant and it ceases to bother him.
The stress associated with tinnitus is also removed.
