How Are Things Going IRW?

Well, the other day I was speaking with a local community volunteer about social networks and Facebook, namely about how so many folks spent so many hours playing around on these things.
Personally, I don't belong to Facebook and really don't participate much on any social networking platforms.
Why you ask? Well, because it isn't real life, it isn't the real world.
My endeavors happen in the real world and although I guess I really do have substantial presence in the virtual one, I live in the other.
Okay so, let's talk.
You see, as I was explaining all this to my new acquaintance, she told me that she had a name for this; IRW, which stands for "In the Real World".
She recognizes the difference and uses the social networking for some things such as online marketing for her causes and getting the word out, but fully realizes and agreed that there is a time for virtual dialogue and a time to get busy and take action in the community.
It's too bad more people haven't figured that out.
I see so many people playing around online for hours each day, and as they do they assume they are doing great things, organizing their virtual friends and shaking things up.
Still, when you look at all of their results and all the time they spent, well, it isn't really time well-spent, there are better things they could and should have been doing.
Rather, it's almost as if they used up all their time procrastinating, and justifying their hours gone by, rather than allocating the proper time and resources where it really matters; IRW.
Just because one is online and has garnered lots of virtual friends (pictures of people who "liked" what they wrote, said, claimed, thought, or complained about) doesn't mean they have won over any real friends IRW and influenced any actual people outside of their virtual realm.
Perhaps, my best advice here is for folks not to fool themselves, people need to realize that all their online activities are a hobby, and that time could be better spent.
Sure, people waste time, endless hours watching nonsensical things on TV too, but is that really any excuse for putting all your eggs in one basket, rather than properly allocating your time out here, IRW? What you do is your choice, hell, it's a free country, you are allowed to do whatever you want, pass the time however you feel, I am all for that, but please realize that the virtual world is not the real world, yet.
Please consider all this and think on it.
