    Simple Prevention

    • The sun is the No. 1 cause of wrinkles. Studies have found that sun exposure even outweighs genes when it comes to aging. Cover up with a hat and sunglasses and wear sunscreen.

Don't smoke. Studies show that smoking contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

Get enough sleep. Sounds simple, but lack of sleep causes the body to make excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. And when you do sleep, lay on your back. This will avoid crease lines that will eventually become permanent.

Check your eyesight. Squinting constantly when you read eventually leads to wrinkles.

    Diet

    • Add fruits and vegetables to your diet. The antioxidant compounds in these foods fight damage and helps skin look younger. Eat more soy. The jury is still out, but studies show that soy may have a positive effect on the firmness and structure of skin. Salmon will add protein and omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Both are essential for young-looking skin.

    Creams and lotions

    • Moisturize. Moist skin makes lines less noticeable.

Look for a cream that contains an ingredient dermatologists say works, such as retinoids. Retin-A may be the best known of these FDA-approved wrinkle treatments. Retinol, a form of vitamin A, can repair sun damage.

Alpha-hydroxy acids are fruit acids that remove the top layer of dead skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, especially in the eye area. High levels may aid with collagen production.

Studies have shown than topical vitamin C can raise collagen production and protect against sun damage. Look for the L-ascorbic acid form.

Idebenone, an antioxidant, has been shown in research to reduce skin roughness, dryness and lines while increasing hydration. Pentapeptides increase collagen and reduce wrinkles.

    Medical options

    • Botox is used to relax muscle beneath the wrinkle, removing creases. Fillers, such as collagen, are used to "fill-in" the crease to smooth it out. A variety are available, including Restylane and Juvederm.

Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin, causing skin damage that the body counters by making more collagen. Dermabrasion also removes skin's top layer, bringing more evenly textured skin to the surface.

Laser resurfacing takes energy from a light source and removes the top layer of skin and cause the same collagen-producing reaction as peels.
