How to Treat Leather Shoes
- 1). Clean your leather shoes using dish detergent soap dissolved in warm water and a cotton cloth. Remove any excess. Apply saddle soap inside and out, and remove any excess. This first step will thoroughly clean your leather shoes without damaging the leather.
- 2). Apply black polish or wax to your shoes once they are dry. Allow the shoes to dry again; this may take up to an hour. Once dry, apply the leather protection product, which will waterproof your leather shoes and thus protect them from harsh elements.
- 3). Put your leather shoes in a fabric storage bag and place that inside of a shoe box.
- 4). Wear your shoes on dry and smooth ground. Avoid mud, water and rough terrain to avoid scuffing or tearing the leather.
- 5). Rotate the pairs of leather shoes you wear. Avoid wearing the same pair of leather shoes on a daily basis to prevent them from wearing out.
- 6). Insert a shoe tree into each leather shoe when you are not wearing the shoes. This will preserve their shape.
