Whether you are new to social media or have been in the game for a long time now, you should always be redefining your social bookmarking strategy.
The world of the Internet moves very fast, and if you stick to the same strategy for a year or more, you are likely to be making some mistakes.
So what should you be changing in your strategy? For starters, it's always a good idea to investigate new and old social bookmarking sites in order to know where your niche is moving to.
A group of just four or five users that start using a site and are interested in your market can really shift the center of focus to a new site, and you need to be on your toes to find out if this has happened.
It's normal to worry that this might take a lot of time, but there are alternatives to going into the sites and spending hours there every day.
Get Google Alerts for certain keywords related to your business, and as soon as you notice movement on websites that aren't your usual stomping grounds, investigate them.
Something I always remind my clients of is that social bookmarking is not a one way street.
If you approach it with only one objective in mind, you will probably be losing a great chance to boost your business spending little extra time a day on a bookmarking site or two.
Forget about only using these sorts of sites to spam with all your content and hope to get some extra traffic.
This may give you a small boost in the short run, but in the long run your reputation will be ruined and you will more often than not find yourself banned from the most relevant sites.
With the proper social bookmarking strategy, you will not miss out on the great things these sites have to offer.
Whatever the site you are using at the moment, always stay active, commenting on other people's links, placing useful links to other websites and engaging in a conversation with the community.
The only thing you have to take into account is that people are looking for information, not for publicity.
So if you include phrases like 'buy my product' or even 'check out my site for great discounts on...
' you will automatically alienate 95% of your potential users.
You might get a small boost in traffic, but again, this is a strategy for the short term, not the long term.
If, however, you place informative content and share your wisdom, you will probably not see immediate results, but little by little other users will trust you and have you as a referent in your field, and that means good and regular business from loyal customers.
