Want to stop your scalp from flaking? Hairdressers say dandruff is the single most common scalp complaint their patrons have.
Dermatologists seem to agree that virtually everyone has had the "Dandruff Demon" during their lives.
Just ignoring the problem will not make it go away.
Ignoring only leads to the scratch and itch cycle.
Doing nothing about the condition lets the scaling build up on your scalp which causes itching, which leads to scratching.
Scratching too hard can wound the scalp and leave it open to infection.
This may sound extreme, but scalp infection happens all too often.
Experts are unanimous; they say to wash your hair often.
Washing your hair more often helps to keep your dandruff under control.
Start by using a mild, non-medicated shampoo, this should be enough to control the problem.
Dandruff is sometimes cause by an overly oily scalp.
Make sure to dilute the shampoo with equal amount of distilled water; this will control the oil on your scalp without aggravating your scalp.
If shampooing with a mild diluted shampoo is not working, you can try an anti dandruff formula.
Different ingredients in the anti dandruff shampoos work in different ways.
The ingredient selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione work the fastest, they help to retard the rate at which the scalp cells multiply.
Those with salicylic acid and sulfur, loosen flakes, which in turn will allow you to wash away the dandruff easily.
The antibacterial shampoo cuts down the bacteria on the scalp and reduces the chance of infection.
For very stubborn cases of dandruff, it is recommended to use a tar-based formula.
Lather with the tar shampoo leaving it on for 5 or 10 minutes so the tar has a chance to work.
Don't rinse the dandruff shampoos off too quickly.
Give the shampoos a chance to work.
Remember to lather your scalp twice when using a dandruff shampoo.
Be sure to rinse you hair very thoroughly.
Rinsing the second time will not eliminate all the medication on your scalp; a small amount of medication will be left so it can keep working until the next shampoo.
While shampooing, gently massage your scalp with your fingertips; this will help to loosen scales and flakes.
But don't scratch your scalp.
Scratching your scalp can lead to sores and you don't want them to develop on your scalp.
