A Woman"s Drive
It's no secret- times have changed. The statistics are in: women are part of the work-force and using technology now more than every before.
€56% of professional jobs in the U.S. are held by women.
€28% of students holding a B.S. in Computer Science are women.
€55% of Twitter users are women
€55% of Facebook users are women
Along with work and technology come computer accessories. Despite the prominence of women in the workspace, USB flash drives still generally lack that flash of "cute" that many females like.
Yes, the indispensable USB flash drive; perfect for carrying files between the office and home, sharing photos from a trip you and a friend just took, or even just backing up your most private files. Though cloud storage is becoming more and more popular, flash drives aren't going anywhere. A recent report projected that flash drive sales would reach over 500 million sales by 2015. There's something that just makes people feel insecure about the storing their precious data in the "cloud". Even the sound of it seems like the files might just turn to vapor and float away. Flash drives keep your data somewhere tangible; just fill it with your documents, throw in your pocket, and carry to school or work.
... Or turn it into a cute stuffed animal, load with pictures and love songs and give to a loved one. That's what this young entrepreneur did.
"She wanted a cute flash drive," explains Doug Stienstra, "but I couldn't find one anywhere. Nothing seemed to look like anything she would consider 'cute', so I made my own." He ended up making a plush elephant USB drive that was cuter than ever. It even had a name, Eleanor. Not only did his girlfriend love it, her friends love it, and her friend's friends... and this simple gift soon escalated into a full-time business venture with some very unique twists.
They're called FlashPals, and each animal character directly contributes to a specific charity to help endangered animals - "Save data. Save the wild." An animal-lover since childhood, Stienstra hand-picked each organization to find the most active groups who are tangibly making a difference in the animal world. Users can also donate their own amount to these organizations. Stienstra even designed each FlashPal to come pre-loaded with "WILD files" that spread awareness and promote the cause further. He is constantly thinking up new characters to keep the line-up fresh and to continue promoting new causes.
"Yes, every FlashPal is a limited edition and will go 'extinct', but the causes never will. We'll always take direct donations to support any of the specific charities, even after that FlashPal is replaced by new characters."
Beyond saving data and saving the wild, FlashPals are CUTER than ever. Unfortunately, only one animal is available for pre-order at this point (Jack the Giraffe), but Stienstra says it will be in stock already in July 2012, along with a new zebra design. "Many more animals are coming," he reassures.
It all started with a woman's drive- she got what she wanted, and now you can too.
