It is far too common for companies to experience the pain of consequences at the hands of an employee that blabs the company secrets or other sensitive or personal information on one of the social networking sites.
Though it is not usually malicious on the part of the employee, the effects can be the same as if it was intentional.
Once the information is out on Facebook or one of the other sites, it's out in cyber world forever.
Companies that take the step of guarding their proprietary information with non-disclosure statements are a bit better protected than if they do nothing at all.
The trick to this situation is in regular training so the employees all know the rules regarding the use of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or MySpace and any other information sharing site on the web or on the phone.
These websites are a very valuable tool where marketing is concerned.
The problem lies in the way in which they are used.
It is similar to fire.
Fire is wonderful for cooking, warming, and ambiance, but used in a different way it can burn entire communities to the ground.
Think of social websites in this way.
The use of social networking without proper training can also get you a lot more headaches.
It can cause a worm, a virus, or a hacker to get into the company's computer system and steal the information or shut down your entire system.
Most companies cannot afford to shut their systems down for even a day without losing time and money.
The key to these problems is not to forbid the use of electronic communication, necessarily, but to train, train, and retrain.
The young adult population in particular tends to 'update' their profiles often.
The updates may be about what they ate for lunch or about their new gym membership.
The updates may also include the annoying customer that just left your place of business or the key code to get into the front hallway of the building! The training needs to include the basics of difference between what is personal and theirs to share and what is private information and must not ever be shared at any time with anyone or on any form of social network.
There is sometimes such gray area here that it is difficult to get your point across to an employee who just doesn't get it.
