Non-type 1 Non-type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Non-type 1 Non-type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Monogenic forms of β-cell diabetes have been broadly divided according to age of presentation, into neonatal and adolescent/adult forms (the latter previously termed maturity onset diabetes of the young – MODY). Herein we describe the identification of monogenic diabetes in a lady with a long-term history of treatment for type 1 diabetes diagnosed in early adulthood.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is believed to account for 5–10% of all cases of diabetes mellitus in adults and type 2 diabetes mellitus for over 85%. Non-type 1 non-type 2 diabetes mellitus has been included in the American Diabetes Association Classification of Diabetes since 1997 under the heading of 'other specific types'.
