    • 1). Remove any stuck-on moss and lichen from the surface of the stump until the bare wood is left exposed.

    • 2). Attach a 1-inch diameter wood drill bit to an electric or battery powered hand drill.

    • 3). Steady the drill bit onto the outer rim of the tree stump so that the bit is at a 90-degree angle to the stump's surface.

    • 4). Begin drilling through the stump while keeping the bit at a 90-degree angle to the surface. Keep consistent and even pressure on the drill to push through the wooden material. Once you drill down to the end of the drill bit, let go of the power button on the drill and lift the drill bit cleanly out of the hole.

    • 5). Drill a series of holes around the rim of the stump in the same manner and space each hole 2 to 3 inches apart for even coverage.
