How to Knit a Slouchy Hat on Circular Needles
- 1). Cast on 72 stitches and place the stitch marker after the last cast-on stitch. Ensure that your stitches are not twisted and that the bottom of the cast-on stitches are facing into the circle of the needle.
- 2). Knit approximately two inches in a two-by-two rib pattern by alternating between two knit stitches and two purl stitches across the round. This will take about eight rounds, depending on your knitting tension.
- 3). Knit the main body in stockinette stitch by knitting every stitch on every round for a further 24 rounds.
- 4). Begin the crown decrease by repeating the following stitch pattern to the end of the round: knit six stitches and knit two together.
- 5). Knit the first five stitches of the next round and then knit two together. Repeat to the end of the round.
- 6). Knit the first four stitches of the roudn and then knit two together. Repeat to the end of the round.
- 7). Continue decreasing in this manner until you have 27 stitches left on your needle.
- 8). Break the yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail and thread through the tapestry needle. Slip the stitches from the circular needle and onto the tapestry needle, then pull tightly on the yarn tail to secure the stitches in place.
- 9). Turn the hat inside out and weave the yarn tail into the existing stitches until you can't see the tail anymore.
