Why Therapists Use Puppets in Therapy Sessions with Children
Puppet therapy is an technique used by trauma therapists to assist children in communicating their thoughts and emotions. Puppets are used as communication tools. Children will often feel safer expressing their feelings through play-acting with puppets as an alternative to speaking directly with an adult therapist. Children are also prompted by their therapists to mirror or mimic traumas experienced with the puppets.
Puppets or dolls are sometimes used in hospitals, clinics, and emergency rooms so that children who do not have verbal skills can demonstrate how they were hurt.
