You have taken the scary step to find out whether you have diabetes or not and you just found out that you do.
There is no need to panic.
What you need to do is take the necessary steps and become proactive about this disease.
It is your life after all.
To put it in perspective for you or a loved one affected, diabetes causes more deaths than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
Diabetes management starts with the foods you eat on a day to day basis so ask yourself - what are you eating? Depending on the type of diabetes you have, it can either be cured or effectively managed.
Diabetes Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed by the body.
For people with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce any insulin and individuals affected need daily shots of insulin.
This usually begins in childhood.
With Type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells in the body ignore the insulin produced.
This is the most common type of diabetes and cases are increasing at a rapid rate mainly due to life style choices and a lack of exercise.
With diabetes, because of the problems with insulin conversion, glucose levels in the body build up in the blood and tissues, then overflow into the urine which is then excreted causing the body to lose its main source of fuel.
Pregnant women may also develop a form of diabetes known as gestational (pregnancy related) diabetes in the third trimester which usually resolves itself after childbirth.
Diabetes Nutrition Managing or curing diabetes is accomplished through proper nutrition.
Following a proper meal plan focusing on healthy eating in conjunction with exercise, insulin, and other medications is very important for diabetes management and it is not something that you can cast to the side or pay a serious price.
The first step in having proper nutrition is reviewing the labels on pre-packaged foods in the grocery store.
The "Nutrition Facts" label on the item provides information on the quantity of nutrients in foods, such as calories, fat, and fiber, which play a role in major health concerns.
The label also shows the serving size so you need to pay close attention to what the serving sizes are on the label because a lot of them are unrealistic serving sizes.
This information can serve as a valuable tool to help you determine what to eat and how much to eat at one sitting.
Carbohydrates As a diabetic, it is important to keep tract of the amount of carbohydrates consumed.
Carbohydrates more than any other nutrient such as fat or protein, affects blood glucose levels the most.
Eating moderate amounts of carbohydrates will help to regulate blood glucose levels.
Multivitamins Everyone needs to incorporate a good multivitamin for healthy living.
Diabetics may want to add a vitamin supplement containing 100% DV for chromium and at least 25% DV for magnesium.
Do consult with your doctor first before including any multivitamins in your diet.
Do not sit on the sidelines and let diabetes take control and lead to all sorts of unpleasant diabetes related complications.
Take action now by finding out as much information as you can about this disease and the various therapies that are available to you.
