How to String a Racquet for Tennis

    Vertical Strings

    • 1). Cut off 20 feet of string if you are working with a two-piece racquet. For a one-piece racquet you should cut off 40 feet of string.

    • 2). Insert the string into the first hole to the left, on the bottom of the tennis racquet.

    • 3). Pull the string to the top of the racquet and feed it through the hole vertical to the one it is fed through at the bottom.

    • 4). Push the string through the next hole at the top of the racquet and then send it through its counterpart at the bottom of the racquet.

    • 5). Repeat this technique until all of the holes at the top and bottom of the racquet have string running through them.

    • 6). Pull the string tight if you like your tennis racquet to have a lot of tension. Or, keep it slack if you prefer less tension in your racquet. This is down to personal preference.

    • 7). Tie a knot in the end of the string where you started stringing the vertical string and where you ended. Ensure that your knot is tight and as close to the racquet as possible.

    • 8). Cut off the excess string.

    Horizontal Strings

    • 1). Feed the string you've just cut off into the topmost un-stringed hole on the left side of the tennis racquet.

    • 2). Guide the string horizontally to the hole on the opposite side. Go over the top of the first vertical string it passes, then underneath the second. Continue this pattern until you reach the other side.

    • 3). Push the string through this hole and then back through the next hole down, just as you did with the vertical strings. Continue the over and under weaving pattern until you have strung the entire racquet.

    • 4). Tie a knot in the both ends of the string. Make this tight and as close as possible to the racquet.

    • 5). Cut away any excess.
