The Healthy Families Insurance Program
- The Health Families program has specific requirements that need to be met in order for children to join the program. This includes being younger than 19, currently living in California, as well as meeting the rules established for citizenship and immigration. Individuals that can apply for Healthy Families include parents, legal guardians, foster parents and stepparents. Only the income of the parent will be used to determine eligibility.
- The Healthy Families program offers comprehensive health, vision and dental coverage for children that qualify. Children who are enrolled in the program are eligible for any health care service that is covered and is deemed medically necessary. Pregnant women can also have certain services covered by the program. Proof of birth such as a hospital certificate of birth is to be sent in within the first 30 days after the birth of the baby.
- Individuals and families who have children enrolled in the Healthy Families program will pay a small premium each month. The cost will vary depending on the size of the family, income levels and the type of health plan that was chosen. Premiums can range from $4-to-$17 for each child with a maximum limit of $51 for all children enrolled in the program. A co-payment of $5 is also required when services are rendered.
- The Healthy Families program has various benefits depending on the specific plan that was selected. Health benefits include physician services, preventive care, prescription drugs, maternity as well as inpatient and outpatient hospital stays. Dental benefits include preventive care such as cleanings every six months and fillings when needed. Vision benefits include eye examinations and prescription glasses every 12 months.
- The health plans available in the Health Families program are selected from the county in which an individual lives. Once a county has been selected, a list of available plans will be displayed that are available in the county. The premium amount per month will be provided, as well as information that can be viewed about each specific plan.
