How to Get Your Finicky Dog to Eat
- 1). Try adding tuna on top of your dogs food. Most dogs love tuna and sometimes mixing some in their usual food will be enough to get them to eat it.
- 2). Try gourmet pet foods and sauces. These can be found at any pet store and have lots of different flavors you dog can't resist. Sauces are like condiments for your dogs food. Just pour it over their food and mix it in.
- 3). Try warming their can food in the microwave for a few seconds. It will bring out the smell and entice them to eat it.
- 4). For dry dog food, add a little warm water to create a "gravy" by letting it sit for a few minutes.
- 5). Don't leave dog food lying around. Have a set time for your dog to eat and if he or she won't eat within half an hour, put the food up for the next meal time. Keeping them on a schedule will teach them to eat at certain times and they will learn they need to eat it when they get it.
- 6). Try giving them chicken broth or add it to their dog food. The added flavor and smell may help them to eat.
- 7). Try giving your dog scrambled eggs or boiled chicken with rice. Only use rice that is boiled, not fried. Never add salt and pepper to them.
- 8). If you try all these tips and your dog still won't eat, take them to the vet. A healthy adult dog can go 3 days without food but most dogs will not do this unless he or she is ill, and at that point, your dog needs medical attention.
- 9). If you dogs blood sugar drops from not eating for a while, give them a teaspoon of maple syrup. If their blood sugar drops too low serious problems can arise.
