    • 1). Identify the grave site and patriot, and search the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution database for information pertaining to the soldier. The National Society Sons of the American Revolution has a database as well. You will need the full name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, rank, unit, state, and pension number if applicable. Included in the information must be the residence of the soldier during the war.

    • 2). Supply proof of the burial location. A picture of the tombstone, Bible listing, or cemetery plot list or map is sufficient. A commemorative site can replace the actual burial site if unavailable. A marker will indicate the grave is in a different location.

    • 3). Attach a written statement by the owner of the cemetery or director giving permission to install the marker. The statement must include the date and name of the patriot to receive the marker. Make a copy of the application and all supporting documents.

    • 4). Forward the completed application and supporting documentation to the historian general of the society you choose to dedicate the grave site -- the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution or National Society Sons of the American Revolution. Applications are available on both society Web sites. Once you receive permission, you can order a marker from an approved manufacturer. The marker takes six to eight weeks for delivery.

    • 5). Prepare the dedication ceremony by inviting a military color guard, ROTC, or Scouts to present colors. An invitation should include all members of the chapter, family members of the patriot, local politicians, and veterans groups.

    • 6). Check the National Society Sons of the American Revolution Web site for a suggested grave-marking ceremony. The dedication will include the presentation of colors, invocation, pledge of allegiance, member pledges, information about the patriot, a wreath for the grave, and dedication of the marker.
