Everyone knows what a park bench is, but everyone has a different association to them.
Some people will think of the many park benches with dedications on, and some will lustfully look back to teenage love.
Ultimately, everyone has a reason to have a bench in the garden and this article is going to move you towards that reality.
So what do you need to build a park bench? You have two choices when it comes to the timbers that you will be sitting on.
They should either be 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 - which ever you thing will be more suitable.
(2 x 6 is more comfortable).
Then you need to choose the bench legs.
I recommend 4 x 4 posts or 4 x 6 posts.
An important point I should mention is with the type of wood you choose.
Cedar and redwood are known to be very resilient woods but they are also quite expensive.
Pine on the other hand is cheap and easy to get.
However, you'll need to treat it with water resistant paint annually in order for it to stay usable.
To start off you want to saw the bench legs.
I would say you want to saw the bench legs to no more than 3 ft - of course, this is your choice though.
You'll want three identical posts with one main supporting one with four components linked by quarter inch lag bolts.
The length of the bench slats should be 6ft, or thereabouts, and the angle of the seat to the back should be 100 degrees for the most comfort.
To successfully build an enduring bench you want to make life easy for yourself.
With the use of a workbench you'll be able to join every support piece with lag bolts effectively.
For the lag bolts that show, you can drill a round indentation so the lag bolt can sit nicely out of view.
After this you should drill the supporting pieces together so that they are connected with a lagbolt and then you can begin to drill the bench slats onto the bottom.
Finish the job by sanding and treating if you wish and congratulations, your very own bench!
