To eliminate dust mite allergens, first, take actions to reduce dust mite populations and second, reduce exposure to dust. No one method has been found for reducing mites and relieving allergy suffering.

Unlike other flooring, carpet keep dust mite allergens locked and trapped inside the carpet pile fibers. Although tile or hardwood floors are easier to remove the allergens they also allow allergens to become airborne with each footstep. Allergy sufferers should be diligent when cleaning their carpets as to not disturb the allergens and release them into the air, making the situation even worse.

The researchers found that the interventions significantly reduced house dust mite allergen concentrations. The use of allergen-proof covers and either professional or in-home laundering of bedding reduced allergen levels in beds. Both dry steam cleaning plus vacuuming and vacuuming alone lowered allergen levels in carpets. Vacuuming and dry steam cleaning each reduced allergen levels in upholstered furniture. Dry steam cleaning machines have recently become available for home use.

House dust mites live in bed mattresses, carpeting and soft or upholstered furniture. They seek these protected environments and are rarely found in other parts of a building or residence.

Wash all bedding weekly. Research has shown laundering with any detergent in warm water (77 degrees F) removes nearly all dust mite and cat allergen from bedding. If you cannot launder blankets, dry clean them once a year. Shampoo, steam clean or beat non-washable carpets once a year.

The most important tool for managing house dust and dust mites is the vacuum cleaner. Regular, thorough vacuuming of carpets, furniture, textiles and other home furnishings such as draperies will help keep dust mite populations low. Vacuums with a water filter are preferable to those with a disposable paper bag because a water vacuum removes a greater range of particle sizes than paper-bag types. There are vacuums with highly efficient filters (HEPA) designed for use by people with allergies to dust. It is better to vacuum thoroughly once a week rather than lightly on a daily basis. Vacuum mattresses and padded furniture thoroughly; 20 minutes for each mattress is not too long.

Daily and weekly dusting, vacuuming and cleaning of upholstered furnishings or carpeted flooring -- combined with periodic carpet pre-conditioning, shampooing and/or extraction -- should be performed.

Installing inside and outside entry mats will also help reduce the amount of dirt particles that enter the building, which cause soiling of carpet fibers and higher levels of dust in the air. Applying a preventive maintenance program will help control household dust and mites that inhabit our homes, diminish indoor air quality and contribute to allergies.

Dust mites are easily removed using a commercial grade carpet cleaning solution made specifically to kill dust mite. If you decide to tackle the job yourself though, you may have trouble locating the right chemicals to use and because of how quickly the mites spread throughout the house.

Steam and vapor steam are the best ways to clean carpets for allergy sufferers because they use hot water to kill mold and fungi as well as other allergens effectively.
