How to Become an Agricultural and Food Scientist
- 1). Take courses during high school that will help you prepare for this position, such as math, biology, chemistry and environmental science.
- 2). Enroll in post-secondary education. Most individuals in this field have a bachelor's degree in agricultural science. However, a master's degree or doctorate degree is required in order to do research. A PhD in a agricultural science is needed if you plan to teach at the college level.
- 3). Participate in a co-op placement or internship. During this program, you will get to shadow an individual in this field and see what the work environment, and daily tasks are all about.
- 4). Get certified by the The American Society of Agronomy or the Soil Science Society of America. Although certification is not required it may enhance your job prospects in these fields. These certification requires at least a bachelor's degree combined with work experience, and the passing of an exam.
- 5). Find a job in either research or development. Many people in this field work for businesses, private practices or the government. Some may also work in offices and others may work in labs. You can also work in a post secondary institution as a teacher or researcher.
