How to Eliminate Pool Algae
- 1). Locate any pool equipment that was used in the pool while it was infected and place the infected equipment in the pool. Untreated pool equipment can reinfect the pool with algae.
- 2). Open a bottle of algae killer. Pour the recommended dosage for your pool's size into the pool. In general, three ounces of algae killer is typically used per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Check the chemical's packaging for specific measurements.
- 3). Fill a five-gallon plastic bucket halfway with water. Open the chlorine shock and pour the recommended amount into the bucket. Stir the water until very little undissolved shock is visible. Use a long wooden spoon or similar utensil when stirring to avoid direct contact with the chemical solution.
- 4). Pour the water and shock mix into the pool water while walking around the pool's perimeter. Occasionally add water to the bucket to keep the mixture diluted.
- 5). Wait at least 12 hours for the chemical treatments to take effect. Assemble your pool's vacuuming equipment. Vacuum the dead algae and other debris off of the bottom of the pool. If your filter system has a "backwash" setting, vacuum the pool waste using that setting, which sends debris directly out of the pool's waste line. Vacuuming on "filter," the default filter setting, sends the vacuumed water to the pool filter for cleaning.
