    Cleaners

    • Many household cleaners are acidic. These include, but are not limited to, toilet bowl cleaners, drain and metal cleaners, anti-rust products and some swimming pool chemicals. Not all of the brands of these items are acidic.

    Ingredients

    • Check the labels of household agents to determine if they are acidic. The most common ingredients that point to acidity are sulfuric, hydrochloric, oxalic, phosphoric and chromic acids, as well as sodium bisulfate.

    Uses

    • Acidic agents are used to remove hard-water deposits and discoloration from metal stains. The most acidic household agents will also eat away at clothing and cause irritation to the skin, and should not be used on all surfaces, according to the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

    Warnings

    • Many household items that contain acid will also have warnings printed on the label. These warnings will include the suggestions to use them in well-ventilated areas and to wear gloves. According to an article in "Drug Store News," acidic household agents, "Have the ability to induce mild to severe chemical burns, regardless of the route of exposure."
