Darjeeling is the hub of tourist's influx all year round, it is indeed known as the king of Hill stations with beautiful hills and mountains adorning it which is the town's pride and visitor's bliss. The popular legendary belief has it that once Lord Indra's (Dorjee) sceptre (linga) fell in the city and that is how Darjeeling got its name. Personally for me Darjeeling brings a hush of childhood memories and holiday bandwagons but it is equally ideal for family and friends. One of the places if I am not exaggerating is the identity of the city that is Observatory hill Darjeeling which is situated at the Chaurastha road and for me is gateway to heaven. Darjeeling observatory hill is the convergence point of many tourists every year both national and international.

Darjeeling observatory hill is a typical ten to fifteen minutes' walk, you won't get any transportation as vehicles are not allowed here but walking would prove to be as good an experience, on your walk uphill you may notice many monkeys but yes do not try to feed them otherwise not harmless but they may try to get notorious and also better of you. Darjeeling Observatory Hill is an enclosed one with Mall and stalls on its sides so you can shop while you walk!

What to see on the hill:

While you are on the apex of the hill which gives you a paranoia and beautiful sight of snow clad mountains and peaks like that Mount Kanchenjunga where you know nature is served to you at its best, but apart from that moment of blissful indulgence you could also sight many temples most famous of all is Mahakal temple which is a symbol of faith for both Hindus and Buddhists' devotees. The temple is built in the devotion of lord Shiva, apart from this you would on walking further up the hill temples of Sai Baba and Hanuman. Monkeys as mentioned earlier would be your constant company plus the shopping stalls on the way to top of the Darjeeling Observatory Hill.

Mahakal cave is another attraction in the hill which you would see on your way back down the Observatory Hill Darjeeling, you would have to crawl a little to get inside of it and it has idols of Hindu goddess like Maa Durga and Bhagvati Devi plus you would see Shiva's Linga placed there.

The hill is open for visiting from 6am in the morning to 7pm in the evening and one experience you should not miss out on is to watch the sunrise from the top of the hill. What you would see is a thing of beauty and a joy forever! What would be best is to rent out a cottage or hotel near this hill to stay nearer to nature and beauty, you will find plenty of them.
