How to Make Tapered Candles With Metal Molds
- 1). Spray the interior of the metal mold with a silicone spray mold release. Hold the nozzle of the spray 8 inches away from the mold and spray an even layer into the mold.
- 2). Thread the wick through the center hole of the wick bar. Thread the wick through the metal mold and down through the wick hole on the bottom of the mold. Pull the end of the wick to the outer edge of the bottom and fold it up against the edge. Make a 1-inch ball of mold seal and press it onto the wick where it is coming through the hole on the bottom of the mold to seal it off. Place the tapered candle mold in a metal cooking pan to catch dripping wax.
- 3). Fill the bottom of the double boiler with 2 inches of water. Turn the stove burner on high. Place the melting pot with pouring spout into the double boiler. Place 1 pound of broken 139 degree Fahrenheit molding/taper candle wax pieces into the melting pot. When the water boils, turn the heat down to medium low. Place a candy thermometer in the wax when it begins to melt. Heat the wax until it reaches 190 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate any air that is trapped in the wax.
- 4). Add one candle dye chip to the melted wax. Stir the wax with a wood stirring stick until the dye chip has dissolved and colored the wax. Add 1 ounce of fragrance oil. Stir the wax thoroughly to completely mix in the oil.
- 5). Move the wick bar to one side of the mold and pour the wax into the opening of the mold. Use a wood stirring stick to ease the wax into the mold and stop any drips from occurring when you tip the spouted container over to pour it. Pour the wax all the way up to the top, then move the wick bar back to the center of the mold so that the candle sets with the wick in the correct position.
- 6). Tap the sides of the mold with the wood stir stick to eliminate any bubbles of trapped air in the wax. Wipe down the outside of the mold repeatedly with a cool damp cloth to aid the candle in cooling and hardening. When it has completely cooled you will see that the wax has shrunk and created a sink hole around the wick.
- 7). Reheat the remaining wax from the first pour in the double boiler to 10 degrees hotter than the first pour, at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the wax into the center of the candle. Stop pouring when the wax is just below the first wax pour level. Tap the mold to eliminate air bubbles. Cool the candle as before. Reheat the remaining wax and pour the wax in to fill the sink hole in the center of the candle that was created after the second pour cooled. Let the candle sit and cool off completely overnight.
- 8). Look at the candle to determine if it has set. When it has cooled and set, it will separate from the edges of the mold and is ready for removal. Remove the mold seal from the bottom of the mold. Remove the wick bar from the wick. Turn the mold upside down and gently pull the wick at the top of the candle to remove the tapered candle from the mold. Cut the wick off at the bottom of the candle. Level the bottom of the taper with a craft knife by carving the wax away until it is level and smooth. Trim the top wick to 1/4 inch in length.
