Travelers and Shippers

• Always make sure your luggage or cargo does not contain anything that is illegal to ship or transport. Aerosols, weapons and chemicals are all examples of items that are frequently banned from many shipments or that may require special handling, depending on the method of shipping. Travelers should have their luggage secured so it cannot be easily opened by someone else, and they should keep their possessions with them at all times and never let them out of their sight until they are turned over to baggage handlers. Once they retrieve their cargo upon arrival at their destination, they should check each container or luggage piece for any signs of damage, theft or tampering.
  
  

Cargo Handlers

• The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recommended more advanced screening of checked baggage at airports, believing that checked baggage it is not checked as thoroughly as carry-on luggage and thus provides a possible opening for terrorist attacks. The Aviation and Transport Security Act requires the screening of all property carried aboard a passenger aircraft in the United States. Any sea vessels coming to a U.S. port have to send a manifest with detailed cargo contents to the government no later then 24 hours before departure from their point of origin. All cargo is also subject to random inspections that can happen at any time upon arrival.
