How to Make a U.S. Flag Out of Student Photos
- 1). Group the student photos into two piles, based on the colors in their clothing: predominantly blue or predominantly red.
- 2). Place the posterboard onto a hard work surface. Use an X-acto blade or similar cutting tool to cut away a portion of the top in a horizontal fashion. Create a rectangular shape that resembles the proportions of the flag.
- 3). Lightly draw 12 evenly-spaced horizontal lines onto your posterboard using a pencil. These lines make the 13 red and white bars. You do not need a line at the top or at the bottom.
- 4). Lay out the photos of the students in red outfits in seven rows, horizontally, leaving a blank white row between each. There should be a red row at the top and a red row at the bottom. Do not place photos in the upper left-hand corner, as that is the blue area with the stars.
- 5). Step back so you can inspect the rows from a distance. Adjust or replace any photos you feel don't have enough red in them. Remove one photo and run a glue stick along the back, applying glue liberally. Paste it into the same spot. Repeat this with each of the photos.
- 6). Place the predominantly blue photos in the available square on the top left. Step back to inspect them. Remove one photo. Turn it over. Draw a star on the back using a pencil. Cut the star pattern out using an X-acto blade.
- 7). Apply the glue stick to the back of the photo, avoiding the star-shaped hole. Paste the photo back onto the posterboard. Repeat this step with the rest of the blue photos.
- 8). Use a large paintbrush to apply Modge Podge to the top of all the photos as a protectant. It looks white when you apply it, but it dries clear.
- 9). When dry, use the glue stick to affix the posterboard onto a piece of foamcore for support. Hang the finished flag in the classroom or hallway.
