How to Create an Ideal Outdoor Growing Environment Indoors

101 191
Is This Possible, Or Just A Fantasy?

The first consideration is that without ample light most plants will not grow, except mushrooms and a few others. Somehow, you just have to bring the sunlight indoors by reproducing it artificially. This used to be done in the past using incandescent bulbs, T8 fluorescent or HID lamps. Today, many are beginning to use the far simpler CFL lamps and the latest technology SSL, sometimes referred to as LEDs. The latest in LED technology incorporates tuned lighting using specific wavelengths that plants will respond to in a most efficient way. This technology was developed for NASA and later was commercialised for indoor gardening enthusiasts everywhere.

Here Is What I Have Done

I used a small table I had around in a spare room. I clamped a 1x3x30 pine boards vertically at both ends and somewhat centered them front to back setting them at first so that the tops were about one foot above the table, sort of like goal poles in a football stadium. I then placed a 1x3x48 inch piece of pine board across the length of the table resting atop the vertical [goal poles]and drilling two screw holes at both ends screwed them down. I then removed the board and mounted four CFL mounting sockets to mount 60 Watt lamps requiring only 15 Watts each, wired them in parallel and tied them to a timer which was set for a 12-hour on/off cycle. I then mounted the assembly back to the vertical [goal poles], this time I applied some wood glue before I screwed them home. I placed some pans to catch the overflow from watering and placed my seeded pots in the trays, turned on the power strip and I was done. I have provided a link to show how I have grown a few herbs using a CFL grow light of my design shown below:

What About Other Aspects Of The Outdoor Environment?

Yes, like fruit flower pollination how do you bring bees indoors. We already know the answer to that question? You don't. There are simple ways to pollinate your fruit bearing plants. When the flowers bloom you can just shake the plant slightly every so often. You can also run a fan which can be turned on for about an hour each day for a few days that will cause some pollen distribution, or you can just get a small squeeze bottle and aim it at the flower blooms. Repeating this procedure for a few days should do the trick. The use of a fan can serve two purposes: First, it will create an outdoor wind environment which normal plants get and second: It will help to pollinate the flowers. As far as watering you just pick up a pot and if it weighs like that of a feather it need water.
