    Growing Conditions

    • Adaptable to most soil and pH conditions, spruce stonecrop does require full sun. Small yellow star-shaped flowers sprout during the summer and at maturity the plant will reach up to 8 inches high and 23 inches wide. Though it makes a sturdy ground cover and can be used as a lawn substitute, it cannot tolerate any foot traffic.

    Care

    • Water regularly the first season to allow plants to develop a good root system, after which the plant will only require occasional watering, and actually prefers average to dry soil. Easy to propagate, simply break off pieces and plant where needed, ensuring a good water supply until the new plants are well established.

    Facts

    • Attractive to butterflies and deer resistant, this evergreen keeps its blue-green coloring all year long. A versatile plant, it can cover a bare area quickly and adds interest to containers or hanging baskets. Use as a pathway edging or plant in rocky areas with other alpine varieties.

    Other Stonecrop Ground Cover Varieties

    • While blue spruce stonecrop is an independent variety, there are other stonecrop ground cover options.
