How to Become a Prosthetics Technician
- 1). Obtain a high school diploma. Graduating from high school is a standard requirement to become a prosthetics technician. You also qualify if you have a GED.
- 2). Acquire experience. Work as a prosthetics helper to gain experience before becoming a technician. A prosthetics helper assists a technician in basic tasks.
- 3). Complete a formal prosthetics training program. You need at least an associate’s degree in prosthesis technology to work in the field. The associate’s degree may require you to finish an internship program where you perform job duties supervised by an experienced technician.
- 4). Work on needed skills. During your formal training or as a helper, you can work on needed skills like operating machinery such as power tools. You also have to know how to follow directions and communicate with diverse groups.
- 5). Seek certification. You can obtain certification through the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists, or AAOP. Complete certification requirements such as possessing a high school diploma or equivalent, have at least two years of prosthetics experience and complete a formal training program.
