Vintage charcoal, pellet and gas grills
BBQBandit Writes:
"Just curious about who may own some of America's oldest and great performing antique and vintage charcoal, pellet and/or gas grills. Does anyone own the original Weber charcoal kettle or a Charmglow 1959/60 gas grill? I for my part own a 1950's Hasty-bake, Similar Sears grill made by Big Boy, a 1960's cast-iron charcoal Charbroil, a 1962 and 67 -70 Charmglow(s) and a slew of old Broilmasters, falcons, etc., old Hibachis and similar vintage grill accessories.
Also, have a 1963 grill buyers guide to confirm age and production dates. What do you own and do you still cook on them and how do they perform compared to what's available now?"

Hi, I have a BIG charcoal grill with a spit attached. It is circa 1940's and it is in the shape of a large stagecoach with glass lights on the front. It is approximately 4 feet high and 4 1/2 feet long and 2 feet deep.
It has all original tires and decorations on it and the company name on the Grill is “ROYAL” The spit says “Chattanooga Royal Co.” Does anyone know anything about this grill or the company. It was purchased in the Wash. D.C. area in the 1940's.

I have a 1958 Char-Broil CB-19 “portable pit” This little charcoal grill has an 18 by 12 cooking top. My Dad bought it when he bought the house (before I was born) and I inherited it when he moved to Florida. It weighs about 35 pounds and stands on three removable legs. I have the original brochure from my Dad so that is how I know so many details. We used it up until this year when my wife bought me a gas grill for Father’s day. It is much quicker to get the gas started and we have not used the little charcoal one at all this year. I do miss the fun of cooking the “old-fashioned” way but the gas is quicker and easier. I will not get rid of it, however.

We just picked up a Kenmore charcoal grill w/electric rot-how to spell rotissery – had cool 60's drink holders to stick in the ground by the lawn chair and a tin of dutch? matches like the normal paper matches but of wood, the original book for the grill, we will try it out today!
ps – someone earlier commented need parts for vintage grill – i searched for 1960 charcoal grill and there were replies from many (too bad there is a grill brand name VINTAGE – spoils the search) OLD grill part suppliers…

I HAD an old charcoal grill made by Atlanta Stove Works called the “Cue Cart”, and it was simply put the finest charcoal grill I’ve ever used. I found it discarded on the side of the road do doubt after many years of service to its previous owner. It had a broken wheel which was an easy fix. I used it for many years until I threw it out not being able to get needed parts. This was before the internet days, and I sorely regret to this day the loss of that grill, as they are not made any more. The quality level and features were exceptional, and not likely to be reproduced even if someone had a mind to, because of the cost to manufacture at that quality level. It was a relatively small grill, after all.

(33) Don Rosa says:
My father bought a Char-Broil no. 450 cast iron charcoal grill unit at Sears back in the early 60's (if I recall correctly). He wasn’t using it anymore by 1980, so I took it and gave it a new coat of black stove paint.
I’ve used it ever since, almost every weekend in the summers. No need to say what a fine piece of equipment this is — not like the flimsy junk made now (if you can even find a charcoal grill mixed in with all the lousy GAS grills stupid people now lust over… what is the point of grilling over a gas flame?!?!). Comparing an old 1960's charcoal grill to a new one is like comparing a new piece of stereo equipment to a Pioneer unit from the late 70's. (Maybe they make some things better than they used to, but not charcoal grills or stereo equipment.)
This one still looks almost like new — only a bit of rust starting to show on one lil’ corner. Due simply to humidity, the flimsy aluminum ash catching tray is rusting out in the center, so I just lay in a scrap of “hardware cloth” and some foil. No problem. Of course, the built-in aluminum thermometer stopped working in the 60's, but a magnetic wood-stove temp gauge replaces that easilly.
I also have all his old rotisserie equipment. Two electric motors, used all the time, still work perfectly after nearly 50 years. Also, various exotic rotisserie accessories like assorted clamps & big baskets. Not to mention an *ingenius* rotating shish-kabob holder — maybe they still make those for rotisseries, I wouldn’t know (have never needed to shop for new equipment!), but this old one is an elaborate work of stainless steel art that you can snap loaded kabob skewers in and out of.
Well… I Googled “vintage char-broil grills” and this discussion popped up, so I had to add my story! Carry on…..

Whoa, what did I start back in March of 2005? Nice to see all the comments coming in…..alas a few years late. Never too late to preserve a bit of bbqing past.
Now, it seems from all the comments that they’re a lot of Royal Choo-Choo Trains and Stagecoach grills out there. But, what about the oldest of all charcoal grills……..No not Weber, Big Boy, Hasty Bake, but Henry Ford’s Picnic Grill? Given away to all who purchased a model T or A auto from him in the early nineteen hundreds. Who owns one (model 10, 20, 30 and the smaller Picnic grill (not given away for free)?
Lastly, does anyone have/ever seen a bag of Smokey Bear’s charcoal (not the grill….just the charcoal)?

>>>>>But, what about the oldest of all charcoal grills……..No not Weber, Big Boy, Hasty Bake, but Henry Ford’s Picnic Grill? Given away to all who purchased a model T or A auto from him in the early nineteen hundreds.
And I assume you know why he did that, eh? He was trying to create a market for his OTHER business besides Ford Motorcars — the Ford Charcoal Co. Henry Ford invented the charcoal briquette as a way to use the scrap wood and sawdust from his auto factories. The company is still around today, having gone through a name change early on to KINGSFORD Charcoal.
Outdoor cooking would not be very popular if we had to chop & burn firewood just to grill a hot dog. Henry Ford “invented” backyard grilling.

Wow! This thread has been running continuously since 2005 – 6 years and still going. I’ll do my part to keep it so.
I have a Big Boy CUE-CART by Atlanta Stove Works. My late father in law bought it new and we inherited it a few years later. It’s from the 60's or early 70's.
Living in SoCal – we use it all the time. We really don’t have a winter here. It’s been used thousands of times. Still have the original word side boards (refinished, of course). I do agree with the earlier poster who said it’s the finest bar-b-que cooker ever. It’s been used soo much the cast iron bottom charcoal grates have burned thru in places.
Everyone says the hamburgers I produce on the Big Boy are the tastiest they have ever eaten.
This cooker is almost indestructible.
Keep the thread going folks.

Hi, Mr. Behnke: We sure enjoyed reading your comments about your Atlanta Stove Works ‘Cue Cart.’ Our family’s sentiments as well – it truly is the finest bar-b-que cooker ever! We (my son and I) purchased one in 1978 as a Father’s Day gift. The only thing we have had to replace on it is the wheels (unfortunately, however, the plastic on them is grey instead of white like the originals). If you have ever painted your Que Cart and it turned out satisfactorily, could you please tell us what kind of paint you used? and how you applied it?
Thank you, kindly.

I just puchased an old grill and would like some information about it. I guess it to be from the sixties or early seventies. It is round, about 18 inches in diameter, with a grill that spins on a center support, and the grill can be raised or lowered by means of a crank on the side. Construction is steel with aluminum legs/handle. It has a table top (plywood with pink formica top) that hooks onto the side and is spported by a detachable u-shaped leg. It is on a tripod base with wheels and a tray, and has no lid. It is in almost mint condition, so I assume that it did not come with a lid. It’s a metallic bronze color, and the only writing on it is a decal “AMC” on the side. Did American Motors ever give grills away as a premium? I can’t find any information about it online. Thanks.

I NEED HELP !!!!!!! Where in the WORLD can I find BIG BOY GRILL INFO? Here is what I have learned Big Boy Manufacturing Company was based at one point in Burbank California. I know this only because the 1 and only picture of a big boy grill I’ve seen online was for sale on eBay with original box & had this stamped on it. It’s like the company never existed. I want to purchase my great grandfathers original big boy grill or at very least find a few enthusiast with these grills who are willing to exchange pictures & email. My grill is rectangular has to small doors on the front a red glass knob on the right so you could raise and lower coal tray. The original big boy emblem was on the left. It was a open top grill when my father brought home from his grandfathers house in California. I am not sure if it ever had a top or not. The wheels on the back were similar to a set of old red radio flyer wagon wheels. The front were just small caster wheels that allowed you to move the grill left and right. ANY & I MEAN ANY INFO/PICTURES STORIES WILL BE APPRECIATED. if you respond to this post just put MIKE H BIG BOY GRILL at the top/beginning of your post. Thank you all for your time & effort

I have a Cue Cart from Atlanta Stove works I’ve been using since I purched in at Fedco Stores in 1973. Over the years I taken in apart twice and sandblasted it. Six years ago I completely rebuilt it with new wheels and replaced the sheetmetal with stainless steel. More than once it’s been loaded up and on its way to the dump. It’s by far the greatest barbeque ever built for smoking meats. The cast iron grills are almost shot so I don’t know how much longer I can make it last. Yesterday’s smoked tri-tip was great,

Derrick,
I recently dug up an old grill I haven’t seen since I was a kid while tilling up a garden at my grandfather’s old farm. I dug it up along with lots of other debris (and a Evil Knievel toy, YEAH!) that got buried after Hurricane Eloise hit back in 1975. Before Eloise, any time we went fishing or camping with a friend of his from Georgia, Mr. Turner, we always took the little grill with us to cook on. Mr Turner use to bring us new fishing gear all the time too cause he worked for Zebco. I’m pretty certain Mr Turner gave it to Big Daddy (My Grandfather) as a gift because the only time he would break it out was when Mr Turner came down to go fishing.
Anyway, it is a Table-top Cast Iron “Char-Broil” brand grill (and has 3 leg holes on the bottom to raise it). It is oval and has “Char-Broil” written in the grate it’s self. The bottom of the grill is cast too and is shaped like half of a Propane tank/cylinder. I think it may be a Charbroil model 48 because, on the underside, it says ” CIW USA 48 “.
I have tried to google it and find out more about it, but the only pics I have been able to find are for newer gas grills. Any info about it would be great.
PS I have used it a few times, but a friend told me I should quit using it and restore it because it could be very rare and valuable. Thanks again in advance for any info you can send my way.
Clint

I have a Charbroil CB-150 charcoal grill. I found it abandoned in an alley, and brought it home to fix it. It had just a small fragment of cooking grate left, but I could see that it had once had cast-iron grates. I have been trying to find replacement grates, but no luck. The grill is no longer made. It looks a bit like a smaller version of the Santa Fe grill, but it lacks a charcoal feed-door on the front. The dimensions of the cooking area are 26 inches long and 15.5 inches deep.It works well with an adjustable porcelain coated grate, but I wouldn’t mind getting it fitted with cast-iron grates. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I saw a couple of posts about Big Boy Barbecue from last year. I understand that they were owned by Kelley Manufacturing after 1962. The logo on the barbecues were Big Boy but later the logo had Big Boy by Kelley mfg. I believe Kelley was sold in the early 80's and then later dropped out of sight–perhaps went out of business–and with it probably the bbq line. I believe the one I am looking for is the Big Boy 2400. It was a 70's or 80's model. Drop me a line if you have one to sell! Thanks!

We are still using the natural gas Charmglow CC1 Double grill that was at our house when we purchased over 21 years ago! (Not sure when it was actually installed – 60's?) Both my neighbors still have theirs too! Every year I contemplate getting a new grill with all the modern bells and whistles, but I just can’t part with this thing! It performs well after all these years and with an annual cleanup, and occasional painting and part replacement it’s as good as new.

Picked up a CUE-CART made by Atlanata Stove Works, it is in perfect shape with the exception of the wood table tops on the side. I’ll probably replace them with treated redwood and give it a new paint job as it is a bit faded.
Temp gauge works, Rotisserie option was still with it.
Paid $5 at a Estate sale.

Derrick,
I recently dug up an old grill I haven’t seen since I was a kid while tilling up a garden at my grandfather’s old farm.

I have a Big Boy by Kelly Mfg. It’s a model 2400 with an electric rotisserie. It’s new in the box. The box has been opened and it’s pretty dusty, but I believe everything is there.
