Dog Whisperer
The truth is that no one can whisper to a dog (or any other animal for that matter) and have the animal automatically do anything that it was not trained to perform.
A well trained and accredited dog behaviourist can get your dog to do stuff that some people will consider mind blowing. There are many times, when you may be faced with a fearful, nervous or a very aggressive dog and not have the foggiest idea of what to do. A dog behaviourist uses his acquired skills to come close to the most cautious pet and befriend it; while others stare at him or her in great admiration.
Believe it or not, there is no hocus-pocus when it comes to communicating with any animal. A good dog behaviourists, knows a whole lot about a pet's body language and is able to communicate some of these body languages back to the pet.
A good dog behaviourist understands a whole lot about dog behavior, and can effectively read the outward signs of a canine's inward emotional state. So when the dog behaviourist does more than a person who does not know squat about dog behavior and is completely clueless when it comes to reading pets, the dog behaviourist is believed to have great pet communication powers.
Dog whispering actually comes down to the following:
a. Education
b. Experience
c. Empathy
Having the right education and experience of being around pets and understanding how they think and act helps enhance the dog whisperer's abilities to communicate with pets immensely. A dog behaviourists simply knows how to read your pet's body language.
Empathy is also necessary when it comes to honing your dog whispering skills. A dog whisperer is NEVER abusive, authoritarian, or heavy handed. This is because dog whisperers understand why the pet is behaving the way he/she is, and want to balance the dog's need with his (the owner's) need in a complementary manner.
Do not confuse empathy with forfeiting your alpha-roll. Leadership is still part of dog whispering, you will still need to show 'em who the boss is, utilizing the domination style and channeling it towards a more co-operative and empathic approach. Doing this will not confuse the pet as to who the alpha dog is, as a matter of fact, a more compassionate and predictable owner is typically the one that is more fun and easier for a dog to follow.
As you now know, becoming a dog whisperer is not magic. You can read books and other materials online, observe your own dog, attend seminars, and observe other people's dog at the pet park.
