How to Buy a Car in New Jersey

    • 1). Shop for the vehicle you want to buy. Read your local newspaper and go to websites such as eBay Motors, Craigslist or the New Jersey State Auto Auction. Test drive the vehicles you like, and be sure to take the car to a mechanic before purchasing.

    • 2). Discuss payment with the seller. Before paying, make sure the title is free of any liens or that the seller can provide you with lien release paperwork to take to the MVC with your title.

    • 3). Pay the seller. Verify that the seller has signed the back of the New Jersey title before leaving. As the buyer, you are responsible for providing the correct odometer reading, sales price, date of sale, your printed name, address, signature and license number.

    • 4). Contact an insurance agent. Give the vehicle identification number (VIN) listed on the title to the agent. Discuss any questions or policy changes and obtain proof of insurance--have it emailed or faxed if necessary.

    • 5). Go to a local MVC office with your driver's license, title and proof of insurance. Fill out the application for registration (form BA-49), which you can obtain at the MVC, and see an MVC representative.

    • 6). Pay your title, registration fee and sales tax. Receive your two license plates and retain all copies of your paperwork to put in your glove box. Arrange for a ride to return to your car and put the plates on it so that you can drive away legally.
