How to Wash Single Hung Windows
- 1). Brush off the window sill indoors and the top sill of the lower sash with a clean paint brush or a similar type of brush. Dust collects quickly on the sills.
- 2). Spray glass cleaner over the top and bottom panes.
- 3). Scrub the top pane and then the lower pane with a sponge or paper towels to break up grime. Wipe the panes with paper towels.
- 4). Spray the window panes again with the glass cleaner. Run a squeegee down each pane. The University of Nebraska Extension recommends wiping off the squeegee with a damp cloth or sponge after each pass. This helps the squeegee glide, rather than scrape, across the window.
- 5). Take your supplies outdoors, and clean the exterior side of the window. If you have a garden hose close by, gently rinse the windows with the hose and squeegee them. Otherwise clean the exterior just as you did the interior.
- 1). Brush off the window sill and the frame around the vinyl window.
- 2). Spray a solution of dish detergent mixed with warm water (about 1 tsp. of detergent per gallon) on the vinyl windows, or use a commercial vinyl window cleaner.
- 3). Scrub the top pane and then the lower pane with a sponge to clean dirt from the vinyl. Rinse out the sponge if it gets too dirty.
- 4). Rinse the vinyl windows with clean water. Use a squeegee on the windows or towel-dry them to prevent streaking and spots.
- 5). Repeat the same cleaning process for the exterior side of the vinyl windows. Rinse them well with a hose before cleaning if one is available.
