How to Set an Ice Fishing Pole for Bluegills
- 1). Select an ice fishing pole for bluegills. Light or ultralight models two to three feet in length are best.
- 2). Attach your chosen reel to the rod. Attach them together with electrical tape. The combination should fit comfortably in your hand, and the reel should be small enough to hold the tiny line sizes that ice anglers use.
- 3). Put a fishing line on the rod and reel. Two-pound, clear monofilament line is best for bluegills.
- 4). Spool the line onto the rod and reel. Insert the end of the line into the rod guide at the tip of the fishing rod, and then thread it through all of the line guides on the rod. Open the bale of the fishing reel, and wrap the line two times around the spool of the reel. Tie a knot so the line is tight around the spool, and then close the bale and start reeling line onto the reel. Stop reeling when the line is just below the rim of the spool, and then cut the line so one foot hangs beyond the end of the fishing pole.
- 5). Put a small bobber on the fishing line, and then crimp a split-shot sinker on the line about eight inches above the end of it. Tie a small hook or jig head that weighs 1/32 of an ounce onto the end of the fishing line.
- 6). Set the bobber so that it suspends your hook or jig about 12 inches off the bottom. If you are not getting any bites, raise or lower the bobber so that you can hold your hook or jig at different depths within the water column.
