How to Attach Scud Hooks and Attractor Hooks to Fly Lines
- 1). Attach a section of leader control to the fly line using a nail knot. Leader control is a strong and flexible material that will be permanently attached. Place a six inch length of leader control on a nail knot tool. Wrap the material around the narrow end of the tool seven times. Push the tag end through the gap in the tool and pull it out of the tip of the tool. Insert the fly line through the tip of the tool and through the wraps. Hold the fly line with your thumb and pull on the tag end of the leader control to release the wraps from the tool and tighten them around the line. Trim the tag end of the leader control and the fly line.
- 2). Tie a surgeons loop knot at the end of the leader control to create a permanent loop on the fly line. Create a loop in the leader control and make two overhand knots with the loop. Pull it tight and trim away the tag end.
- 3). Attach a leader to the loop with a loop-to-loop connection. Feed one loop through the other and pull them tight against each other. Most leaders come with a loop but you may have to tie a surgeons loop on leaders without the pretied loop.
- 4). Tie 2 feet of tippet to the end of the leader with a surgeons knot. This will make the leader last much longer if it has a tapered design. Also match the tippet size to the leader size for a secure connection. Place the ends of the tippet and leader facing in opposite directions. Make a double overhand knot with the two and pull the knot tight. Clip away the tag ends.
- 5). Tie the hook to the tippet with a clinch knot. Feed the tag end of the tippet through the eye of the scud or attractor hook. Wrap the tag end around the main stem of the tippet six to seven times. Feed the tag end through the loop formed at the base of the wraps. Hold the tag end and the fly while you pull the main stem to tighten the knot. Clip away the excess tag end.
