    Conserve Bathroom Water

    • Replace your old shower head with a water-efficient one. Take shorter showers, or turn on the water to get wet, turn it off to soap up, and turn it back on to quickly rinse yourself. If you take a bath, plug the tub up before turning the water on. Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth. Wet your toothbrush and turn the water off while you brush and rinse. If you get a drink of water in the bathroom, use what's left in the cup to water a houseplant. Install a water-efficient toilet.

    Conserve Kitchen Water

    • Never use running water to defrost food. When you get a drink of water in the kitchen, don't throw half of the cup down the drain. Water a plant, or put it in your pet's water bowl. Turn off faucets tightly. Assign one drinking glass to every family member each day. This cuts down on the water you use washing too many dishes. If you wash dishes by hand, plug up both sides of the sink -- one for washing and one for rinsing. Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan instead of under running water. Soak pots and pans, instead of scrubbing them under water. Instead of using the garbage disposal, start composting leftover produce for your garden.

    Conserve Landscape Water

    • Adjust the sprinklers so only your lawn is watered. To minimize water evaporation, water in the early morning or in the evening. Sweep the sidewalk and driveway, instead of hosing it down. Put a timer on your sprinklers and install a rain sensor, so watering doesn't occur during a downpour. Reduce or eliminate your lawn and replace it with drought-tolerant plants, and other landscaping such as rock, gravel and stepping stones. Install rain barrels to catch water for the yard. Use drip irrigation in beds and borders.

    Miscellaneous Water Conservation

    • Wash only full loads of laundry and adjust the water level to the size of the load. Recycle the gray water into the yard if possible. Check the entire house for leaks and fix them. Watch your water bill to catch an unusually high bill that might indicate a leak in the pipes or under the house. Wash your car on the lawn, so you water the grass at the same time.
