Yoga improves body image, posture, fitness levels and helps alleviate stress. Girls often find themselves subject to poor body images. Ninety percent of girls want to change their appearance and, more specifically, body weight. "The practice of yoga, where the mind-body connection is promoted, is a creative and potentially successful way for girls to develop a positive body image," says Dr. Elissa Gittes of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. - The tree pose promotes basic agility and balance.Yoga on a lawn in the summer image by Arkady Chubykin from Fotolia.com
Stand with feet together and arms to the sides of the body, relaxed but straight. Bring the arms up slowly in a circular pattern and bring the hands together in front of the chest. Raise the arms, keeping the hands together until the arms are almost straight above the head. Shift the weight to the right foot and bend the left knee, bringing the left heel up to the right inner thigh. If the person is not able to get the left heel that high on the right thigh it is acceptable to lower the left heel to a comfortable position to maintain the pose. Press the heel of the left foot into the right thigh and point the left toes toward the floor. Bring the arms back down so that the palms are touching in front of the chest. Hold the pose while breathing deeply for one minute and gently return to the starting position by releasing the left leg. Repeat with the weight on the left foot. - The revolved head to knee pose helps calm a person during intense hormonal shifts, including menstruation, menopause and pregnancy. Sit on the floor with legs outstretched. Bend the left knee bringing the flat of the foot and pressing it into the right thigh. Turn the head left while reaching the right arm to the right foot. Bring the left arm up and around to reach toward the right foot coming into a side stretch. Bring the right elbow toward the floor and the left bicep along side the ear. Inhale and upon exhale gently twist the torso toward the ceiling bringing the head between the arms. Hold this pose while breathing deeply for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

The warrior pose II helps enhance the body's balance. Stand with feet double-shoulder width apart with the right foot turned slightly and the left foot at a 90-degree angle. Slowly bring the arms up, outstretched and parallel to the floor at shoulder level. When exhaling, bend the left knee over the left ankle and look past the outstretched left hand. If able, the person should bend the knee far enough to bring the left thigh parallel with the floor. Breathe deeply for five breaths and slowly bring the body back to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.
