    • 1). Disassemble the reel with a screwdriver and set aside all screws for safekeeping. Separate the two halves of the reel.

    • 2). Wipe down the insides with paper towels to remove as much dirt, grime, corrosion and old grease as possible.

    • 3). Use the hand file on tough, bluish-green corrosion spots, then wipe down the reel once more with paper towels.

    • 4). Place the reel parts in a metal bowl and fill the bowl with distilled white vinegar until all parts are submerged.

    • 5). Add baking soda and stir the solution until it begins to foam.

    • 6). Soak the reel parts overnight in the vinegar and baking soda.

    • 7). Remove all reel parts and rinse thoroughly in cold, running water, then pat them dry with towels.

    • 8). Add reel grease to the gear mechanism and place two to three drops of oil on the seal around the two reel halves, the handle, the wire bail over the spool and the spool shaft.

    • 9). Reassemble the reel and rub it down with a clean towel to remove excess oil.
