How to Get Ink Out of Stain-Treated Fabric

    • 1). Determine what type of fabric you have, and read the manufacturer's care labels. Some stain-resistant upholstery fabric is labeled with a "W," meaning it can be cleaned with a water-based cleaner, and some is labeled with an "S," meaning you must use a dry cleaning solvent.

    • 2). Begin by testing a spot of fabric on a part of the furniture or clothing that is not regularly seen. Soak a cotton cloth in hot water mixed with a small amount of liquid dish or laundry detergent, if the fabric can be treated with water, or dry cleaning solvent, if it cannot. Rub the cloth against the unseen part of the fabric.

    • 3). Observe the fabric's reaction to the treatment. If it shows signs of color change or other damage, do not try to remove the ink stain yourself.

    • 4). Use the same method to remove the ink stain. For upholstery, spot-treat the ink stain using either water and detergent on a cloth or dry cleaning solvent on a cloth. Machine wash apparel in hot water and detergent to remove the ink stain. Add baking soda and water conditioner to the load if you wish.

    • 5). Soak the stain for several minutes, by applying either water and detergent or dry cleaning solvent to upholstery or by stopping your washing machine during the soak cycle. Rinse with warm water.
