If you are one of the many, myself once included, that is under the impression that yoga is for slenderishly-too-skinny-flexible hippies, well it is time to toss that notion out and come to understand the truth about yoga.
Yoga actually means "union".
It is the practice of getting your mind, body and spirit in balance with one another, and it was originally intended as more of a spiritual time of quite medication to get in tune with yourself and with your body.
Today we see it offered as a class at the gym, and while that is also beneficial to some, it was never intended to be a physically excruciating activity, but rather a tool to exercise your mental health and to acknowledge the importance of the mind and body relationship.
You might be surprised to find out just how simple some of the basic positions are in helping you cultivate this new balanced relationship within yourself.
There are many videotapes and DVD's that have examples of various yoga workouts as well as CD's and online audio material that you can also practice yoga likewise.
Once you get the hang of some of the basics like Mountain Pose, there is nothing stopping you from listening to your own soothing music to help you customize your own yoga routine that is catered to whatever makes you feel good.
If you find music distracting, you don't even need to use it at all.
Just find what works for you.
Kick off your shoes and find a quite place where you can be alone and give back to yourself for once.
It is okay if you can't reach your toes yet.
It is okay if you don't want to go to the gym class full of those skinny hippy girls.
It is okay to do if you are not a girl.
It is especially okay if you have never tried it before.
Yoga is about you.
It is about acknowledging the importance of balancing the mind and body, a time for quite reflection, and a time to wind down from all of the daily hassles and stresses that bog us down on a regular basis.
Do not let your fear of any of these past understandings and false notions stop you from reconnecting with yourself and developing a new relationship with your mind and body.
After all, you deserve it.
