How to Make a 3D Dress for a Doll

    • 1). Place a piece of pattern paper on a large, flat surface. It should be big enough to accommodate two dolls. Lay your doll on top of the paper. Draw two 1/4-inch-wide straps on each side of your doll's shoulders that will be long enough to tie around your doll's neck, as these pieces will become shoulder straps.

    • 2). Measure the length and width of your doll's bodice beginning right below her arm down to her knees. Record the length and the width measurements. Sketch two rectangles on the right and left sides of the doll's bodice down to her knees, using the measurements you recorded. These rectangles will become the bodice and skirt of the shift-style dress, so make sure the rectangles will fit across the back of your doll once sewn. If necessary, add additional width to accommodate the size of your doll.

    • 3). Take your doll off the pattern paper and set her aside. Cut out the four pattern pieces you have drawn. Put the fabric on the flat surface, wrong side up, and pin the four pattern pieces to the fabric. Cut out the fabric pieces.

    • 4). Sew the cut fabric pieces together with a needle and thread or using a sewing machine. Do not sew the neck straps; they tie together.

    • 5). Embellish your doll's 3D shift dress by sewing or gluing buttons or ribbons onto the front. Make a belt from a ribbon or a piece of matching fabric that you simply tie around the doll.
