How to Store Apples for Longer

    • 1). Sort out any imperfect apples from the bunch you plan to store. Even the smallest bruise on a single apple may ruin the entire bunch you want to store. Look for small cuts, bruises and soft spots and discard any apples containing these imperfections.

    • 2). Wrap each apple in a sheet of newspaper to prepare for storage. The secret of storing apples for long periods of time is in keeping them separated; use the newspaper to prevent them from touching. Do not use any pages or sections of paper that feature colored ink, as this may introduce poisonous elements into the apples.

    • 3). Twist (gently) the edges of the newspaper after it has been wrapped around the apple to create a complete sheath around the fruit. The newspaper does not have to be wrapped tightly around the apple.

    • 4). Touch and handle apples with extreme care to avoid creating bruises which may destroy the entire supply.

    • 5). Stack newspaper-wrapped apples no more than four high in a cardboard box.

    • 6). Choose a cool, dark space to store apples, but make sure they will be safe from freezing temperatures. Like water, the cells of the apple expand when frozen, which will cause rupturing and damage to the fruit. Root cellars are perfect for apple storage, but they are not an absolute necessity. A cool garage or basement will work well for apple storage.
