What Are Eyelets?
- In the apparel industry, clothes makers take advantage of the decorative possibilities of an eyelet's flange. Flanges may be finished in brass, nickel or antique bronze or have an unusual geometrical shape or rhinestone edge, to embellish garments and secure side pockets. Eyelets enhance or increase the durability of all kinds of attire from jeans to cargo pants toskirts and leather products.
- Eyelets are useful as well as ornamental when securing stationery products such as tags, poly bags and binders. Popular among scrapbookers, eyelets can be another way to jazz up a page. Sometimes just a hole punch and a hammer are all that is needed to set an eyelet. Specialized punching tools create decorative effects with eyelets. Specific eyelets for stationery include flat flange eyelets for tags, screw-like eyelets for button and string envelopes, and rolled flange eyelets for folders and legal documents.
- Specialty eyelets may not only appear unusual from other eyelets, but they either may be formed or attached a particular way using a method such as piercing, punching or embossing. Unusual uses for eyelets may include horse saddle bridles, Christmas ornaments, bowling ball holes, and doll accessories.
- A scored setting helps provide a better grip for eyelets embedded in the soft material of a shoe upper. Other features of shoe eyelets may include an "invisible" flange, where the edge of the flange is designed to be inconspicuous, hexagonal eyelets and "designer" eyelets with decorated flanges.
