How to Take Down Christmas Decorations Safely

    • 1). Remove ornaments from your Christmas tree and organize them according to size and whether they are breakable or not. Wrap any glass or otherwise fragile ornaments in tissue paper or bubble wrap, before placing them in storage boxes. Likewise, wrap and store any other fragile decorations you have around your house. The non-breakable items also go in storage boxes.

    • 2). Wrap Christmas lights and garlands around pieces of cardboard. This will allow you to keep the strands mostly untangled for use in years to come.

    • 3). Wrap your live Christmas tree in a sheet to keep it from spilling needles across your house as you drag it outside. If you put up an artificial tree, instead, start dismantling it from the top of the tree. If you need to use a stepladder to reach high places, make sure someone is home to spot you in case you lose your balance.

    • 4). Dismantle outdoor Christmas decorations only if the weather cooperates. If you live in an area where it's snowy and icy, wait until it warms up and melts to remove your decorations from your roof and siding. Always be sure to have another person helping you remove lights from your house -- whether he holds a ladder still for you or catches the lights as you remove them. It's better to have someone nearby in case you slip. Do not tug on light strands attached to your house; if you tug too hard, it might cause you to lose your balance.
