There are several different features available on a power hedge trimmer. The homeowner or commercial landscaper should choose the model with features that best suit their needs. Choosing a machine that is both comfortable and convenient to use is more likely to be used on a regular basis than one that makes the owner uncomfortable.

Safety Features

There are a variety of safety features on power hedge trimmers. One item to look for is an on and off switch that is easy to turn off and is easily accessible. A hand guard near the handle will protect the user's hands from the blade, and a shield can protect the user's clothes whether the machine is on or off. Many hedge trimmers come with a sheath that fits over the blade to keep the sharp teeth from cutting anything while the machine is not in use. The sheath also prolongs the life of the blades by keeping them dry and out of harm's way. A machine with a safety lock will prevent the throttle from moving when the machine is not being used.

Application

What type of shrubbery is being cut has a distinct influence on what type of machine should be used. When using gas hedge trimmers, shaft, blade and power is all different. Double-sided reciprocating blades about 21 inches long can be used for sculpting. Single cuts in one direction are more useful with long hedgerows.

Extra Features

An oscillating blade creates a back-and-forth movement where the blades create the action, rather than the person using the machine. An extended reach trimmer can be set up to create a flat top on bushes. This is a popular look on estates, commercial grounds and gardens. A shafted trimmer allows the blades to go back and forth in opposite directions for a more effective cut.  An extension is helpful in creating a top shelf on a hedge row. A blade tip guard prevents the end of the machine from bumping against the fence or ground when working with the edge of an area.

Power

When choosing a  hedge trimmer, consumer have options of electric, battery-powered or gas. Each has different features connected to it power source. For example, to use an electric model, the user must have a long and sturdy cord and be near and electrical outlet or a power generator. A refuelable gas-powered hedge trimmer requires a container and supply of gas. Some machines require straight gas, while others require a gas and oil mixture. A translucent gas tank will always let the user know how much fuel is left so that it can be filled as needed to complete the project.
