What Are OCX Files?

    Windows OCX

    • The Microsoft Windows operating system comes with a plethora of OCX files that help run almost every part of the computer. Each OCX file controls a specific program within the operating system. One file runs the magnifier utility, while another informs Windows how to handle Internet browser connections, for example. Even the most basic of actions, like the resizing of a window on your desktop, are controlled by an OCX file.

    Third-Party OCX

    • Third-party software, like Internet browsers, video games or photo manipulation software use OCX files as well. The OCX files can be used solely within the program or can modify how the Windows operating system behaves. The OCX file can tell the program how to make the most judicious use of memory resources or how to display a loading screen. Alternatively, the OCX files can tell Windows to show only the program in grayscale or to connect only on certain ports.

    Hardware Driver OCX

    • Software called drivers run computer hardware. The drivers translate Window's instructions into commands understood by the physical hardware. OCX files help translate these commands as well as expand them. Special hardware like a 3-D mouse needs to tell Windows what new commands it can give, in addition to passing those commands onto the new hardware, for example.

    Corrupted OCX

    • OCX files can become corrupted due to virus or malfunctioning memory storage. If that happens, the computer can lose valuable abilities and possibly become unstable. You can fix this corruption by reinstalling the software that provided the OCX files.
