TheWeatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina was established in 1941.

The Museum maintains a permanent collection of 6,000 artworks representing Modern and contemporary American art.

History:

The Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC was founded in 1941 as part of a university teaching gallery at Woman's College (now University of North Carolina at Greensboro).

Currently, the audience of the Museum includes students and faculty, plus the public at large.


As of 2014, the Museum receives approximately 32,000 visitors per year. Since 1995, the Museum has been accredited by the American Association of Museums and was re-accredited in 2005.

Mission:

"The Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets modern and contemporary art for the benefit of its multiple audiences, including university, community, regional, and beyond."

"Through these activities, the museum recognizes its paramount role of public service, and enriches the lives of diverse individuals by fostering an informed appreciation and understanding of the visual arts and their relationship to the world in which we live."

The Weatherspoon Art Museum is located at the corner of Spring Garden and Tate Street, at the campus of UNCG in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Museum's Conservation Department:

The Museum requires the services of art conservators who are trained to research, restore, and conserve the works of art in its collection for future generations.

Famed Artworks in Collection:

The Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC's collection includes work by renowned American artists such as "Willem de Kooning, Louise Bourgeois, Robert Rauschenberg, John Marin, Alexander Calder, Robert Henri, Cindy Sherman, Sol Le Witt, Louise Nevelson, Eva Hesse, and Andy Warhol."

In addition, the collection includes Japanese prints, and prints and bronzes by Henri Matisse.
