  Use large text. By the age of 65, one in three people will suffer from some type if vision loss. Therefore, it is important for the Web designer to use a larger text size than what might be appropriate on a typical website. This will make it easier for the user to view the important information the website has to offer. If possible, allow users to increase text size. Using black and white contrast in text would also make reading text easier. For those with extremely bad vision, offer audio versions of printed text.

  Simplify the organization of the website. The website design should be easy to navigate. With large topic buttons on the left sidebar or hanging at the top of the page, the user should be able to navigate the site fluidly. Pictures on the website should be large enough to view and should fit nicely onto the page without distracting from the text. All links should be direct to minimize complications.

  Use simple language. Use layman's terms when possible and avoid using jargon. Important or technical terms should be highlighted with a link attached to define the term. When giving instructions on the website, label them clearly with bullets or numbering. Adding a picture along side a textual direction can help to avoid confusion.

  Limit distractions. Do not allow advertising on the website. It only distracts the user and the flashing of pictures and texts can be frustrating for those who may already be uncomfortable using the Internet. Be sure to disallow pop-ups that could come from the site, as these can be confusing to new users. Distractions can include any text or picture that blinks, changes frequently or is inappropriate for the website.
