    • 1). Download the free Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack from the Microsoft website. The Compatibility Pack allows you to open, edit, save .docx files in Word 2003, 2000 or XP. Once you have installed the Compatibility Pack, you can open the .docx file in your version of Word. If you want to edit the file and save it, you will need to use the Save As feature in Word. When you click on Save As, and give the file a name, the file is converted to a .doc file for your machine. You can still exchange your .doc file with a Word 2007 user who can open older versions of Word documents without a Compatibility Pack. Before you can install the Compatibility Pack, Microsoft recommends you download and install all high priority updates. Once you are up-to-date, then download the Compatibility Pack and install it on your computer. Once you have installed the Compatibility Pack, you can open the .docx file by double-clicking on the document icon or by opening up your version of Word and clicking "File" and "Open" (See reference 1).

    • 2). Download the Open XML Translator if you are using OpenOffice applications. To get the Open XML Translator, the download is free; point your browser to SourceForge.net and click on the green "OpenXML/ODF Translator Add-in for Office" button. Click on "Download Now" button, then click on "Open" to install the translator on your computer. You can then double-click the file to open the document. You can also get this converter for a Macintosh system.

    • 3). Get the free Docx-converter Dashboard Widget for your Mac by pointing your browser to DocX Converter and searching for Docx-converter Dashboard Widget. The widget download button is gray with the words "Download the Dashboard Widget" above it. Click on the "Docx Converter" button and click "Open" to download your widget. You will need to unzip the file and double-click the widget to install it on your machine. To use your new widget, you drag your .docx file to the widget while you push "F12" to bring up the Dashboard. You will see the words "Drop Zone" on your widget. Drag your file to the drop zone. You should see a green plus sign when you have the file over the zone. Release your mouse to drop the file into the drop zone. The converter changes your file to an .htm file and saves it in the same folder where your .docx file is located. You can open your .htm file with your Web browser.

    • 4). Use the Convert a File program from the DOCX Converter creators to have the file emailed to you as a file format of your choice. Point your browser to the DOCX Converter site and use the "Convert a File" function. Type in your email address, and then click the "Browse" button to search for your file. Select what format you want to have the file converted to by clicking the "drop-down arrow" and then pressing "Enter." Your file will be mailed to you.
